From Latin epitaphium, from Ancient Greek ἐπιτάφιον (epitaphion, “funeral oration”), neuter form of ἐπιτάφιος (epitaphios, “over the grave”), from ἐπί (epi, “over”) + τάφος (taphos, “tomb, grave”).
