Etymology[edit]

From Middle Low German vormōden, composed of vor (for) +‎ mōden (to want, ask for), compare German vermuten (to suppose). The latter part, which is also found in the verb anmōden (to ask for) (Danish anmode) is derived from the noun mōt (mood, mind) (Danish mod).
