[edit] Etymology

Neologism, no etymology, but constructed from Greek gune, -aikos (γυνή, -αικος) 'woman' and kratia (κρατία) 'power'. Disambiguates usage of matriarchy: gynecocracy refers to hypothetical societies ruled by women, distinct from matrilineal bequeathing of property and matrilocal residence of brides.
