Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *jooni, a loanword of Indo-Iranian origin. Cognates on the Uralic side include Estonian joon, Southern Sami joene (road) and Erzya ян (jan, path). Sense diversification from original "path" is particular to Finnic.
