Etymology[edit]

From the same stem as the verb kapāt (to chop) (q.v.): Proto-Baltic *kap- +‎ -lis, from the o grade *kop- of Proto-Indo-European *kep-, *skep- “to cut, to slice (with an instrument).”[1]
