From Middle Dutch crischen (“to scream”), from Old Dutch *krīskan, from Proto-Germanic *krīskaną (“to shout”), from Proto-Indo-European *greyd- (“to shout”). Akin to Middle Low German krūschen, krīsken (“to yell, scream”), Middle High German krīschen (“to shriek”) (German kreischen (“to shriek”)).
