From Proto-Vietic *s-maːʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *maʔ (seed); cognate with Old Mon ma (modern Mon (mɛ̀ˀ, seed, kernel), Proto-Katuic *hamaa (seed; breed) (whence Pacoh mma) and possibly Semelai smaʔ ("person").
