Finnish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From naittaa (to arrange marriage) + -ja (-er); the usage has been extended to a new area because the word sounds similar to nitoja (stapler), especially if one pronounces the latter as if it were an English word.

Noun[edit]

naittaja

  1. matchmaker (one who arranges marriages)
  2. (informal) stapler (office implement)

Declension[edit]

Usage notes[edit]

The term is only seldom used in the original "matchmaker" -sense. It has been replaced by avioliittovälittäjä or avioliitonvälittäjä for a more or less professional service, and the old term puhemies is widely used of friends and other occasional helpers. The informal term amor is used especially of females.
