From nitro- +‎ bacterium or Nitrobacter + -ium.

Noun[edit]

nitrobacterium (plural nitrobacteria)

  1. Any of the several genera of bacteria in soil that take part in the nitrogen cycle, oxidizing ammonium and organic nitrogen compounds to the more soluble nitrite and nitrate.
