From Middle Dutch ontmoeten, untmuten, entmuten, corresponding to ont- + moeten (maybe ont- +‎ moeten?), from Old Dutch *muoten, from Proto-Germanic *mōtijaną, whence also Low German moten, möten, West Frisian moetsje, English meet, Danish møde.
