From pang- + *kadyi (possibly related with Malay kaji), with the root ultimately from Arabic حَجِّي (ḥajjī, “pilgrim to Mecca”). According to Fr. San Buena Ventura (1613), the word is from Brunei. Compare Kapampangan pangadi, Bikol Central pangadyi, Cebuano pangadyi, Hiligaynon pangadi, Maranao pangadi', Tausug pangadji', Javanese ꦔꦗꦶ (ngaji), and Malay pengajian. See also haj.
