Etymology

Uncertain, with a possible meaning of "to portray the Devil" – in this case pintar would get a figurative sense, meaning to become or to impersonate, and sete would be a clipping of sete-peles, one of the various metonyms for Satan in Portuguese – that is, to behave as wildly as a demon. Literally, “to paint the seven”.
