Inherited from Proto-Slavic *plesti (stem *plet-), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *pleśtei, from Proto-Indo-European *pléḱ-te-ti, from *pleḱ- (“to fold, plait, weave”). Cognates include German flechten and Latin plectō.
