[edit]From Old Swedish slækkia, from Old Norse sløkkva, from Proto-Germanic *slakwjaną.
False cognate, but possibly related, with English slake.

- to turn off (a light) or put out (a candle)
- to extinguish, to quench (a fire, a flame or thirst)
- to slake; to add water to burnt lime in order to produce slaked lime
