From slims (sick, ill) +‎ -nieks. A neologism coined in the late 18th century by G. F. Stenders.[1]

  1. (male) sick person, patient (i.e., a person (especially a man) having a health problem)
    gripas slimnieks — flu patient
    nieru slimnieks — kidney patient
    izmeklēt slimnieku — to investigate the patient
    smags slimnieks — heavy (= severely sick) patient
    hronisks slimnieks — chronic patient
