Romanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably a literary verbal derivation from stingheri. Less likely theories include Latin singularis contaminated with Romanian stingher, or from a Vulgar Latin *extraiugularium, from extra and iugum, iugulum, with the idea that this referred to solitary ox not part of a pair.[1]
