Particularly: “Not mentioned by Ratliff at all. The "hold back" and "clump" senses may be related, as both are a sort of "accumulation". Perhaps related to Middle Chinese (MC tejX, “to prop up; to resist”) and/or tiv (to oppose, resist)?”
