[edit]From Proto-Finnic *varbas, possibly from *varpa (“twig”), which is also the origin of varpu. Cognates include Estonian varvas, Ingrian varvas, Karelian varvas/varvaš, Veps barbas, Votic varvõz and Livonian varbāz.[1]
