Italian

Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from French vitrauphanie or vitrophanie, originally a trademark, from vitraux (stained glass windows) + Ancient Greek -φάνεια (-pháneia, appearance), a derivative of φαίνω (phaínō, to show; to shine; to appear); the Italian borrowing was influenced by vetro (glass). A case of trademark erosion.
