Etymology[edit]

From vireō (to be green, verdant) +‎ -tum (suffix forming nouns for stands of vegetation). The -c- would be inserted by analogy to forms like frutectum (thicket, bush), cārectum (reed bed) that are derived from noun stems ending in /k/.
