Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from German Witterung, from wittern, from Middle High German weter (“weather”). By surface analysis, vittra + -ing. Doublet of väder.

- a scent left by an animal (through which it can be traced, also figuratively of for example having a lead on someone or being close to achieving something)

Usage notes[edit]
Most commonly as "få (upp) vittring på" (to pick up the scent of, optionally with "upp" with no difference in meaning) and "ha vittring på" (to have picked up the scent of) in (sense 1).
