Etymology[edit]

From yōliliztli (life) +‎ tlaxcalli (bread), a calque of Spanish pan de vida, from Ecclesiastical Latin pānis vītae, itself a calque of Ancient Greek ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς (ártos tês zōês, bread of life)), an expression found in the Bread of Life discourse in John 6:22–59.
