Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Baltic *žírˀnjas, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źírˀna, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵr̥h₂nóm. In Eastern Baltic, this word narrowed its meaning from “grain” to only one kind of grain, “pea”.[1]
