Back-formation from érdekel. Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries.^[1]

érdek (countable and uncountable, plural érdekek)

interest (an involvement, claim, right, share, stake in or link with a financial, business, or other undertaking or endeavor)
benefit, profit (the thing, event, state etc. that is favorable or useful for the given person, group etc.)
(with a possessive suffix and -ben) purpose, end, aim, goal
