[edit]From Proto-Hellenic *státis, from Proto-Indo-European *stéh₂tis (whence also Latin statiō, Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌸𐍃 (staþs, “place”), and Old English stede (English stead)), from *steh₂- (“to stand”). Equivalent to ἵστημι (hístēmi, “to stand”) + -σῐς (-sis, verbal noun suffix).
