From Old East Slavic пьпьрьць (pĭpĭrĭcĭ), from пьпьрь (pĭpĭrĭ, pepper) + -ьць (-ĭcĭ), from Proto-Slavic *pьpьrь. Cognate with Russian пе́рец (pérec).
