Etymology

From Old Khmer ចោង៑ (coṅ), ចោង (coṅa), ចោង្ង៑ (coṅṅ, to secure, to fasten, to bind, to tie; to construct, to build, to erect; to build with stone or brick, to make stonework or brickwork; etc). Cognate with Modern Khmer ចង (cɑɑng, to bind; to tie) (extended as ចំណង (cɑmnɑɑng), from which Thai จำนอง (jam-nɔɔng) is derived), Lao ຈອງ (chǭng).
