Etymology 1[edit]

First attested in the Won'gakgyeong eonhae (圓覺經諺解 / 원각경언해), 1465, as Middle Korean 삯〮 (Yale: sáks).

Spontaneous gemination of the initial consonant is a periodic phenomenon in Early Modern and Modern Korean, influenced by sound symbolic effects.
