The said root as mentioned is widespread in the Afroasiatic spectrum and appears to also be related to Proto-Indo-European gʰerdʰ- and *ǵʰer-, bearing similar meanings and often derived to mean “house” as in Bengali ঘর. The case is similar to the prevalence and linguistic similarity between Proto-Indo-European *dwino- and Proto-Semitic Tw both meaning “twin”. undo Tags: Mobile edit Mobile web edit

The semitic cognates suggest the original semitic root was q-r-t which is grammatically feminine but no different than q-r just as مدينة is essentially the same as مدين. Seeing as phonetic shifts from the two uvulars /q/ to /g/ and vice versa are commonly observed in Afro-Asiatic languages like Arabic, the postulated root in question can safely be reconstructed as q-r or g-r and the words mentioned consistently bear the meaning of “wall” or a “walled/secure dwelling or settlement”. undo Tags: Mobile edit Mobile web edit
