Etymology[edit]

Possibly attested in the first quarter of the 13th century as Uene ("bogland"), from Proto-West Germanic *fani, from Proto-Germanic *fanją. Later attestations like van den Venschen Kirchhaven point to it being from Middle Dutch venne (mire), ultimately from the same Proto-Germanic term.[1] Compare Dutch Ven-Zelderheide.
