Bavarian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German ābent, from Old High German āband, from Proto-West Germanic *ābanþ, from Proto-Germanic *ēbanþs, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *epi (after, behind) → “last part of the day."

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈɔːmb̥d̥/
  • IPA(key): /ˈɒ̃ːmb̥d̥/ (East Central, Vienna)
  • Hyphenation: Åbend

Noun[edit]

Åbend m (plural Åbend)

  1. evening

Usage notes[edit]

In adverbial use, a more common reference to this time of the day than åm Åbend (in the evening) is auf d'Nåcht (at night), e.g. Mir treffn se murgn auf d'Nåcht "(We're meeting up tomorrow night.")
