Alternative forms

Pronunciation

  • (file)

Noun

État m (plural États)

  1. state, nation
  2. government
  3. Alternative letter-case form of état

Usage notes

  • In older French practice, capital letters did not take diacritics, so É becomes E. This was mostly done because of technical constraints. Formal orthotypography maintains the diacritics.
