From Old Irish arsaid (“old, ancient, aged”), from Proto-Celtic *ɸarstā-, from Proto-Indo-European *per-, *pr- (“before, formerly; through, throughout”) + *steh₂-. Compare Scottish Gaelic àrsaidh.
