From Old French escrivain, from Vulgar Latin *scrībānem, accusative of *scrība, from Latin scrība, with altered declension. Compare Occitan escrivan, Catalan escrivà, Italian scrivano, Spanish escribano. Doublet of scribe, a borrowing.
