Inherited from Vulgar Latin *intunicāre, from Latin tunicāre (cover with a tunic), from tunica (tunic). Compare Aromanian ãntunic, ãntunicari. Compare also Italian intonicare, Spanish entunicar (which were internal formations).

Not related to întuneric.
