Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Baltic *āž-, from Proto-Indo-European *āǵ-, *h₂e(i)ǵ- ‎(goat). Cognates include Lithuanian ožỹs, Old Prussian wosux ‎([vōzuks]), Proto-Slavic *azь (Russian язь ‎(jaz’) “ide (fish)” < “goat”), Sanskrit अजः ‎(ajáḥ), Albanian dhi (< *a-dhi), Old Armenian այծ ‎(ayc).[1]
