- To Russia, the trip's purpose was to affirm the special interests of the Kremlin in the former Soviet Union, emphasizing the meaning and strategic importance of relations between Russia and Kazakhstan in the context of relations between Russia and many countries in in the Commonwealth of Independent States becoming frostier, even at times strained and adversarial as with relations with Ukraine and Georgia; and hoping to strengthen the collaborative strategic relationship between the two nations for the benefit of both sides.
