Etymology[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish اسسز, اصسز (iyssiz, issiz, ıssız, ownerless, lonely), equivalent to is +‎ -siz. Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *idi (owner, possessor), whence iye. Compare Karakhanid [script needed] (īsi, iysi, owner) (from *iye + -si).
