From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ŋul ~ (d-)ŋur. Cognate with Burmese ငွေ (ngwe, “silver”) (From Old Burmese ငုယ် (nguy)), Tibetan དངུལ (dngul, “silver”), Old Chinese 銀 (*ŋrɯn, “silver”), Tangut 𘊟 (*ŋwo², “silver”), Tshangla ŋoi¹³ (“silver”) and Situ po ŋi (“silver”). Compare with Lhao Vo ngaui and Longchuan Achang ŋui⁵⁵.
