From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ŋul ~ (d-)ŋur. Cognate with Burmese ငွေ (ngwe, silver) (From Old Burmese ငုယ် (nguy)), Tibetan དངུལ (dngul, silver), Old Chinese (*ŋrɯn, silver), Tangut 𘊟 (*ŋwo², silver), Tshangla ŋoi¹³ (silver) and Situ po ŋi (silver). Compare with Lhao Vo ngaui and Longchuan Achang ŋui⁵⁵.
