[edit]From Ottoman Turkish شمدی (şimdi), from Old Anatolian Turkish شمدی (şimdi), itself from an earlier اوش امدی (uş imdi), from Proto-Common Turkic *oš emdi, from Proto-Turkic *em- (“now”). By surface analysis, uş + imdi. Cognate with Turkmen and Gagauz şindi (“now”), Azerbaijani indi, Southern Altai эмди (emdi), Tatar инде (inde, “now”), Tuvan ам (am, “now”).
