[Term?] (/šēr/) (< [Term?] (/šayr/)) < [Term?] (/šagr/) from Old Persian *𐏁𐎥𐎼 (*šagra-). compare [script needed] (sgl /sagr, sēr/) (> Persian سیر (sīr)). The Middle Persian word is cognate with Parthian 𐫢𐫡𐫃 (šarg, “Leo; Lion”), Khotanese [script needed] (šarau, “Leo; Lion”), Khwarezmian شرغ (šrγ /šarγ/, “Leo; Lion”) and Sogdian 𐫢𐫡𐫇𐫄 (šrwγ /šruγ/) , ܫܪܘܮ (šrwγ /šruγ/, “Leo; Lion”)
