From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ślaunis, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlównis (buttocks). Cognate with Sanskrit श्रोणि (śróṇi), Avestan 𐬯𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬥𐬌 (sraoni), Latin clunis, Old Norse hlaun, Welsh clun.
