Etymology

Inherited from Old Czech ščet, from Proto-Slavic *sъčetь, *ščetь, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwek- (to gape). See also Sanskrit श्वञ्चते (śvañcate, to become open), उच्छ्वङ्क (ucchvaṅka, cleaving open, gaping). First attested in the 19th century.
