Ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *ǵénu-, *ǵénus. Compare the roots *ǵ(o)nH₂dhos, *ǵnH₂dh-, Ancient Greek γνάθος (gnáthos). Compare also Latvian zods (chin), Old Prussian żauna (jaw).
