Inherited from Proto-Slavic *žьlvъ, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰel-. Cognate with Upper Sorbian žołwja, Lower Sorbian žołw, Polish żółw, Serbo-Croatian žȇlvā and Slovene žélva. First attested in the 19th century.[1]
