  1. (IPA, dated) an oscillating tone, such as rising–falling–rising.
  2. (UPA) similar to IPA, e.g. the Latvian broken tone.

Usage notes

(IPA): The mark is placed before the word or syllable that bears the tone. It is effectively obsolete, having been replaced by Chao tone letters and tone diacritics.

(UPA): The mark is placed after the vowel that bears the tone.
