Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Byzantine Greek ἄμε (áme), singular imperative of verb πηγαίνω (pēgaínō). Plural imperative formed in harmony with proparoxytone imperatives ‑ετε e.g. λέγετε (légete). The alternative form αμέτε (améte) in harmony with paroxytone imperatives ‑άτε e.g. ελάτε (eláte).[1]
