Etymology

Inherited from Byzantine Greek ἀκουμπιστήρι[1] < ἀκουμβιστήριον, from verb ἀκουμβίζω.[2][3] By surface analysis, ακουμπάω/ακουμπώ, stem ακουμπισ- from ακουμπίζω (to touch) +‎ -τήρι (-tíri), following the example of similar tool nouns with that suffix such as σκαλιστήρι (skalistíri, hoe) and ποτιστήρι (potistíri, watering).
