Greek

Etymology

From Byzantine Greek ὀρχίδιον (orkhídion), from Ancient Greek ὄρχις (órkhis, testicle). The change of the initial vowel from ο to α is due to the liaison from the plural: τὰ ὀρχίδια → (elision) τὰ 'ρχίδια → (rebracketing) τ' ἀρχίδια.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /aɾˈçiði/
  • Hyphenation: αρ‧χί‧δι

Noun
