[edit]Exact calque of French billion, with the wrong bi- (“bi-, twice”) corresponding to δίς (dís, “twice, two”) and million to εκατομμύριο (ekatommýrio, “million”) (thus literally "two million"). The mathematically correct formation would be χίλια (chília, “a thousand”) + εκατομμύριο (ekatommýrio). Attested in 1871. Compare to the ancient δισχίλιος (diskhílios, “two thousand”) and δισμύριος (dismúrios, “twenty thousand (twice ten thousand)”).[1][2]
